The 2011 video game Minecraft became a worldwide phenomenon that has since spawned spin-offs, merchandise, and toys. Naturally, a Minecraft movie was eventually announced, and now the first official trailer for the film has been released online.
Interestingly, the film – which is titled A Minecraft Movie – takes a live-action approach to the source material. While the video game setting is recreated in a more detailed fashion, it seems as though a variety of live-action actors will be traveling through this blocky universe. Furthermore, the cast seems to be led by the likes of Jack Black who will be portraying the video game’s first original character “Steve.”
Here’s the official trailer for A Minecraft Movie:
The new film will be the latest addition to Jack Black’s growing portfolio of video game adaptations. Black has starred in several other adaptations over the last few years, including The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the recently-released endeavor Borderlands. The premise of the film, in which characters are transported to the Minecraft universe, seems rather reminiscent of another movie Black starred in – Jumanji: The Next Level.
In addition to Black, the cast of the film also includes Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, and Jennifer Coolidge. Fortunately, the film does offer some designs and creatures straight from the video game, which include piglins and zombies as enemies and a number of friendly animals like sheep.
The film was directed by Jared Hess, known for his work on Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre, while the screenplay was written by Chris Bowman and Hubbel Palmer. Warner Bros. Pictures is distributing the film which was produced by Legendary Pictures, Vertigo Entertainment, On the Roam, and Mojang Studios.
A Minecraft Movie is set to hit theaters on April 4, 2025. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding this interesting new video game adaptation as we have them.
