Heather Langenkamp and Robert Englund are, without a doubt, the heart of A Nightmare on Elm Street. As such, the franchise would not be the same without them. In recent years, however, it’s become a common topic of debate to determine who could possibly replace Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger – especially following the negative reception of the 2010 remake. Now Heather Langenkamp insists that Robert Englund could still play Freddy.
Obviously it’s not something he could do forever. However, she believes that Englund is still in good enough health to play the part for a few more years. In fact, Heather Langenkamp emphasizes just how much energy Englund still has in spite of his age.
Here’s what she first shared with Bloody-Disgusting ahead of the original movie’s 4K UHD release this October:
“These fans are dying for another episode of this incredible story about Freddy and hopefully Nancy. I think it’s a little bit of cold comfort to get a remastered 4K when truly, in the hearts of so many people that I talked to, what they really want is a sequel or some kind of new installment of this epic. That’s the bittersweet part about this whole thing. It’s so great to get something on the 40th anniversary that people can collect. So much has gone into keeping the spirit of Nightmare on Elm Street alive,” she begins.
As mentioned, while it’s great to see the original film celebrated, many fans would love to see the story continue. Especially one that could not only include Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger, but perhaps a part for Heather Langenkamp to reprise her role as Nancy. Though her character was killed off in the franchise’s third installment, there are certainly plenty of supernatural ways that she could come back.
Nonetheless, it’s the possibility of Englund returning that Langenkamp focuses on next:
“I’m hoping the next thing that Warner Bros. focuses on is recreating Freddy Krueger in a way that all of us can really enjoy in a new movie. … I’ve recently gone out with (Englund), and he has a ton of energy. He’s a person that I can barely keep up with on our jaunts around the country. If he can’t do it, nobody can; that’s what I like to say. Until I see him with his walker stumbling down the street, I’m pretty sure Robert Englund can play Freddy Krueger.”
It’s certainly wishful thinking, especially when Robert Englund himself claims to be retired from the role. But maybe one day something can be worked out where he can play Freddy Krueger again – even if it’s only one last time. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional Elm Street news as we have it.
