It’s become quite common for box office bombs to find new life on streaming services. After all, subscribers are often in the mood for new content, and it’s an easy way to check out movies they wanted to give a chance albeit just not in theaters. Now one such 2024 box office bomb from earlier this year is making a comeback via streaming on Max.
It’s unclear why exactly this film flopped at the box office. However, given its status as a franchise prequel, it could be that audiences just weren’t interested in that kind of project at the time. The film only managed to gross $172.8 million worldwide – and that’s against a $168 million budget.
As such, the film earned quite less than what it needed to turn a healthy profit for the studio. On the bright side, it seems to be pulling in numbers on streaming, with the film currently taking the top spot on Max. This proved fans wanted to see the movie – as long as they didn’t have to go to the big screen to do it.
The film, titled Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, takes place 15-20 years prior to the events of Mad Max: Fury Road. Fury Road was a massive success for Mad Max creator George Miller, who returned to direct both of these installments. It seemed as though Fury Road was a guarantee that the Mad Max franchise was back on track – though it took nearly a decade before work on Furiosa could get underway.
The version that finally got made stars Anya Taylor-Joy as the titular character, with Alyla Browne portraying an even younger version. The two replace Charlize Theron who played Furiosa for Fury Road. Several other characters from that 2015 installment also return, though the film notably lacks any kind of appearance from Max Rockatansky outside of a subtle cameo.
For any number of reasons, the film just did not have what it took to make it big at the box office. As such, the franchise’s future remains unclear. Fortunately, it’s nice to see that the film is still wanted enough to succeed on Max.
