It looks like Disney Plus had to make a difficult decision regarding one of their newest shows. The streaming service chose to cancel a series after producing only one season for their platform.
Of course, the Disney Plus series was considered controversial during its run, so this might not be too surprising. The show’s themes and content sparked debates among viewers and critics, leading to a polarizing reception.
Despite this, it did manage to gain a loyal following, with some fans advocating for its continuation.
After all, it can be difficult to run a service when so many shows require massive budgets. If the studios involved decide that a project isn’t receiving enough positive attention, then they essentially have no choice but to cancel.
Now, as shared via EW, the outlet had the following to say regarding the latest series cancellation from Disney Plus:
“The Acolyte is no more. The Star Wars series will not return for a second season.”
As mentioned, the series was followed by controversy throughout its run, so this decision may not be totally shocking. Nevertheless, that doesn’t mean fans won’t be upset. The Acolyte gave us our first look at the High Republic era in live-action form, and as such, it gave new context and history regarding the beloved fictional franchise.
The series, which takes place close to a century prior to the events of The Phantom Menace, introduces new characters and storylines from creator and showrunner Leslye Headland. While Headland hoped to have her story continue with additional seasons, that will no longer be the case. Of course, it seems unlikely that this will be the last we see of the High Republic era.
In the meantime, fans can expect other projects including the shows Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, Andor Season 2, and Ahsoka Season 2. There are also plans to transition The Mandalorian from television to the big screen with The Mandalorian & Grogu.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any further updates regarding all things Star Wars. While The Acolyte has been officially axed, there are still a variety of other films and shows set in the galaxy far, far away to look forward to.
