The Anaconda film franchise has been around since 1997, and according to the latest report, it’s still showing no signs of slowing. In fact, a brand-new reimagining is set to take the Anaconda brand to an all-new level, with major Hollywood players Jack Black and Paul Rudd in talks to star.
Interestingly, there seems to be a more comedic edge with this effort, as it will be a “meta” film. This makes sense when considering The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent director Tom Gormican is directing the Anaconda reboot, having additionally co-written the script with collaborator Kevin Etten.
Here’s what THR had to share about the film’s story after revealing that Black and Rudd are in talks to lead the feature:
“The new story involves a group of friends facing mid-life crises who are remaking their favorite movie from their youth. They head to the rainforest, only to find themselves in a fight for their lives against natural disasters, giant snakes and violent criminals.”
It’s currently unknown which characters Black and Rudd could be playing, though descriptions for either actor has been listed as “an erstwhile director, a man stuck in his job as a wedding videographer” and “an actor who did a stint on a cop show but sees his Hollywood dreams slipping further and further away.”
Hopefully more details will come our way in the near future. The studio has been actively developing this project and they’re said to have wanted “to find the right balance of tones,” so hopefully the current take will work for fans of the franchise. Or, at the very least, those who wouldn’t mind a more “meta” approach to the brand.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the new Anaconda reboot and the potential involvement of Jack Black and Paul Rudd as we have them. It’s certainly an interesting way to revive the series, which has mostly been relegated to straight-to-video territory after the original movie and its first stand-alone sequel.
