Studios have always been looking for a way to continue the Poltergeist franchise after the original trilogy ended in 1988. Talks of a fourth film were followed by a stand-alone series, Poltergeist: The Legacy in 1996, and a remake titled Poltergeist in 2015. Now, nearly a decade later, a new Poltergeist series is in the works from Amazon MGM.

The series was previously announced to be in development, though now the series has two brand-new showrunners. They’ll also be acting as writers and executive producers on the highly-anticipated project. It’s said to be “inspired by the iconic 1982 horror film.”

Here’s what was shared via Variety:

“Kalinda Vazquez and Robbie Thompson have boarded the project as writers, showrunners, and executive producers.”

Vazquez previously worked on projects including Star Trek: Discovery and Fear the Walking Dead, while Thompson has experience as the creator and showrunner of the Supernatural spin-off series The Winchesters.

Other than the notion that the new series is inspired by the original classic film, details are being kept under wraps. As such, it’s possible that the series will play out in the original continuity, recreate the story of the original movie, or exist as its own narrative much like Poltergeist: The Legacy did.

Ultimately, we’ll have to wait for more details to be released. However, knowing that the series now has showrunners and writers attached, it’s only a matter of time before more information comes our way. Amazon MGM has been eager to revive the Poltergeist brand, so we’ll have to see how this attempt turns out.

Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding this new series and any other Amazon MGM projects as we have them. The series is being produced by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television, with Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey of Amblin TV serving as executive producers for the series.
