Disney Plus has had varying levels of success with their Star Wars shows. Their first effort, The Mandalorian, was immensely successful and it’s even paved the way for an upcoming film titled The Mandalorian & Grogu. Other shows, however, have had the opposite effect. In fact, it’s just been confirmed that The Acolyte has been canceled after a single season on the platform.
The Acolyte has faced divisive responses from critics and fans alike since its release on Disney Plus. The storyline takes place about a century prior to the events of The Phantom Menace. As such, the series had the hefty task of setting up an era of the franchise we had yet to see in live-action. Furthermore, it set up various major plot points that inevitably lead to the Skywalker Saga as we know it.
Now, according to Deadline, the series is coming to an end. Here’s what the outlet had to share regarding the cancellation:
“Word of the decision comes more than a month after the eight-episode first season of the series from creator, director, executive producer and showrunner Leslye Headland wrapped its run on Disney+.”
Viewership for the series dropped drastically throughout its single-season run. In fact, the finale only had 335 million minutes viewed, which is “believed to be the lowest for a Star Wars series finale.” While showrunner Leslye Headland had hopes to continue the series after this finale, her plans seemingly will not come to fruition.
Of course, the Star Wars franchise is still moving ahead with other films and television shows. While The Acolyte failed to connect with audiences, there are still other projects to look forward to.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the Star Wars franchise as we have them. Though The Acolyte has been canceled, it certainly left some pretty huge plot threads behind, so it’ll be interesting to see if those are picked up in another project going forward.
