The Marvel Cinematic Universe has definitely had its fair share of ups and downs in recent years. However, things seem to be moving towards an upswing, especially with the recent success of Deadpool & Wolverine. Fans are also hyped for the return of Robert Downey Jr. to the Avengers series (albeit as Doctor Doom). Unfortunately for some movie fans, a MCU sequel has just received a disappointing update.
This update follows several other disappointing reports that this particular film is no longer on the table. Of course, it’s possible that could change, but given the reception of the potential sequel’s predecessor, it does seem unlikely. This disappointing update only further emphasizes the reality of the situation for fans.
The update, which was shared in a piece by Variety regarding actor Kit Harington who starred in this particular Marvel movie, reveals that the studio is not currently working on a sequel. As mentioned, this does line up with previous reports.
Here’s what was specifically shared by Variety on the matter:
“While ‘Eternals’ ended with a note suggesting the characters would return in a sequel, the Chloe Zhao-directed tentpole was a box office disappointment with $402 million worldwide, well below Marvel’s standards. Marvel is reportedly not developing a sequel at this time.”
As such, fans shouldn’t expect an Eternals sequel to the failed Marvel MCU movie any time soon. Likewise, it’s unknown if Kit Harington would reprise his role from the film in any upcoming projects from the studio. Though the future certainly is not set when it comes to this particular franchise.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional Marvel Cinematic Universe news as we have it. This is definitely unfortunate for anyone hoping to see the story of Eternals continued with a proper follow-up. Of course, certain events from the film are being referenced in Captain America: Brave New World and it seems likely that other such crossovers could still keep the film’s story moving forward.
