It’s been officially announced that a new Disney Plus series has been canceled after airing only one season on their streaming platform. The series, which premiered on the service earlier this year, received a positive reception at the time of its release. As such, it may be a surprise to know that it’s been canceled so early.
This information was confirmed by a spokesman for Disney Plus. Though the series is being canceled, they make it quite clear that Disney was quite happy with the series and they’d be happy to once again work with everyone involved.
As for why the Disney Plus series was canceled, exact reasons haven’t been given. Though a new report claims to have heard that it didn’t reach “the threshold for a Disney+ renewal based on several metrics.” It’s unclear what these metrics are, but while the show received a high critical reception, it seems likely that it just didn’t perform well enough with subscribers and views to justify greenlighting another season.
Here’s what they shared via Deadline:
“Disney+ Original series, Renegade Nell, will not be returning for a second season on the service. We’re incredibly proud of the world created by Sally Wainwright and lead director Ben Taylor. We’d like to thank them, our production partners at Lookout Point, the entire cast – led by Louisa Harland – and crew for their incredible work on this series, all of whom we hope to work with again in the future.”
The series took place in 18th century England and follows the titular outlaw played by Louisa Harland. She later acquires powers from a sprite named Billy Blind, played by Nick Mohammed, and the unexpected plot of the show’s only season continues from there.
