Marvel Studios has another hit on their hands with the release of Deadpool & Wolverine. The all-new MCU movie sees Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine as they make their way through the Multiverse. Now, however, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige teases the next Wolverine that will follow after Hugh Jackman.
Hugh Jackman has portrayed the role since 2000’s X-Men. With nearly three decades as the character, and a whole new continuity under the MCU, it makes sense that a new actor would eventually get the part. However, it’s certainly been bittersweet to have Jackman back as Wolverine for at least a little while, especially after fans thought Logan would be his last outing.
Here’s what Kevin Feige had to share on the matter while speaking with Discussing Film:
“Yes. You know, Marvel is celebrating its 85th anniversary later this summer. That’s just the first 85 years, and Disney just celebrated 100 years as well. I think these characters will be around for another 100 years, long after all of us,” Feige begins.
“So, for sure, there will be [eventually another actor as Wolverine]. I think it will be in a very different style and in a different way. I also think if somebody were to attempt to do a Hugh Jackman as Wolverine impression, that would be a pretty big mistake.”
Feige further elaborates that any new actor who takes on the part will have to give their own unique interpretation. As for who that could be, that’s currently undecided, though Deadpool & Wolverine does briefly set the stage. Actor Henry Cavill portrays a variant of Wolverine, and though it’s unlikely he’ll take the role any further, it certainly opens up the possibilities for other actors.
“As comic readers know, there have been various and very, very different versions of these characters over the decades. It would be fun to explore different ones someday down the line. Again, we don’t have immediate plans by any means. But in the decades to come, I think it’s inevitable. If that happens, it would have to be a very different and bold reinterpretation of [the character] because no one will be as great as Hugh Jackman at doing his version of Wolverine.”
It’s definitely going to be an interesting time for X-Men fans in the coming years. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional Marvel Cinematic Universe updates as we have them. While we wait to see who will eventually be next up for the Wolverine mantle, we can still enjoy Jackman’s interpretation on the big screen with Deadpool & Wolverine. The new MCU event is currently playing in theaters.
