The Marvel Cinematic Universe has built itself on stand-alone stories, sequels, and crossover events. As such, fans expected a sequel to one major MCU movie, though Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige has confirmed the project is dead.
Kevin Feige revealed as much about MCU project being canceled while speaking in a recent interview. The axed sequel’s predecessor was an ambitious take for the MCU, one that proved to be extremely divisive with fans.
As such, it might not be surprising that a sequel to the film is not currently in the works, though those who are fans will no doubt be disappointed.
Here’s what Feige shared while speaking with Inlet and that certain story beats are still being acknowledged even if they won’t be utilized for a direct sequel:
“There are no immediate plans for Eternals 2,” before adding. “There are, and I think you’ve seen maybe in a trailer we’ve released recently, an acknowledgment of some of those events. Certain giant things came out of the ocean.”
While Feige confirms they don’t have any plans for Eternals 2, they are using elements from the first Eternals in the upcoming movie Captain America: New World Order. This was confirmed in the film’s trailer and that’s what Feige is referencing, specifically the involvement of the Celestial Tiamut, who was last seen sticking out of the ocean.
It’s certainly going to be a worthwhile plot element for the new Captain America, though some fans will probably be upset that other story elements from Eternals won’t be reappearing any time soon. For example, the first Eternals featured a post-credits scene with Harry Style as Eros and Patton Oswalt as the voice of Pip the Troll, characters that we’ve had yet to see again.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional Marvel Cinematic Universe updates as we have them. As for now, it’s clear that Eternals 2 won’t be happening – at least not any time soon. Of course, anything is possible as far as the MCU is concerned, so perhaps we’ll still have some surprises set for fans in the future.
