The Spider-Man film franchise has become quite divisive among fans. Especially as new adaptations have come around, including so many different characters, and when most of which have featured different creative personnel. However, Madame Web has perhaps been the most negatively-received Spider-Man movie to date, and now one of its stars, Emma Roberts, blames “internet culture” for the movie’s failure.
As explained in an interview with Variety, Emma Roberts personally feels that people on the internet and social media are to blame for the way the film performed. Roberts played Mary Parker in the film, and as she states herself, she does enjoy the film.
Here’s how she began her statement by stating that no one can predict the way a film will perform:
“Things work; things don’t work. Everyone likes to act like they can predict if they’re going to work or they’re not. And the truth is, you can’t,” Roberts begins. “Things do badly, and then they blow up later on TikTok. Things do well, but then you watch them, and you’re like, ‘This did well?’ There is no secret. It’s about doing something goodish and it hitting at the right time. Everything else is like a wish and a prayer. I’m not intimidated by failure, and I’m not intimidated by people having negative thoughts about something.”
She then added her thoughts on the film and how people mocked the film so much via internet culture that she believes it caused Madame Web to fail:
“I personally really loved Madame Web. I really enjoyed the movie. I thought everyone in it was great. The director, S.J. Clarkson, I think did an amazing job. She’s the reason I wanted to do that movie. If it wasn’t for internet culture and everything being made into a joke, I think that the reception would’ve been different. And that’s what bums me out about a lot of stuff, even stuff that I’ve done, is people just make such a joke out of everything now.”
It’s nice to see Emma Roberts still feels positively about the film even if viewers don’t. After all, it can be disappointing to see your work frowned upon. And while her co-stars seem to have mixed feelings about their contributions to the project, Roberts’ own perspective can be refreshing to see.

As for now, it remains to be seen if the world of Madame Web will ever be expanded upon. At this time, however, it doesn’t seem to be likely – whether you want to blame “internet culture” or other reasons for the film’s failure.
