The last actual Shrek movie was released in 2010 with Shrek Forever After. Now, more than a decade later, Shrek 5 has been officially announced with a new video that includes cast and release date details.
The video, which actually features an animated teaser poster for the movie, is accompanied by the iconic “All Star” track by Smash Mouth, which is often considered an anthem for the Shrek franchise. In addition to this fan-friendly way of announcing the movie, fans are treated to the confirmation that original cast members Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz will all return for the sequel.
Of course, Eddie Murphy previously teased that he was working on Shrek 5. Now, however, the news is official – with a release date to boot. Shrek fans can now expect the film to hit theaters for a release date on July 1, 2026, as teased in the Shrek 5 teaser video shared below:

Interestingly, it isn’t stated whether or not Antonio Banderas will return as the voice of Puss in Boots for the sequel. He recently voiced the character for Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, a film set after the events of the Shrek franchise, and one that even set the stage for a fifth Shrek movie during its final moments.
Plot details for the highly-anticipated sequel are currently being kept under wraps at this time, but it’s been said that Walt Dohrn is directing Shrek 5. It will be produced by Gina Shay and Illumination founder Chris Meledandri, while Brad Ableson will serve as co-director on the sequel.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional Shrek 5 news as we have it. Of course, with the film not being released until 2026, it might take some time before more news is shared. Now that we know several original cast members are returning for the sequel, however, fans are certainly bound to be excited.
