There are plenty of box office flops that prove a popular IP or high-profile cast aren’t guaranteed to make a film successful. One particular film proved this particularly well earlier this year in 2024. Now, however, this controversial Marvel movie is still managing to make a comeback on Max.
The film has been streaming on the service long enough to break into the platform’s Top 10 list. As of this writing, the negatively-received Marvel flick is sitting at the number 3 spot. For a movie that so many fans bashed online, it’s surprising to see it beat so many other much better received films to the spot.
Other titles on Max’s Top 10 that the film has surpassed include Five Nights at Freddy’s, The Menu, and Kung Fu Panda. Perhaps the newness of this particular title, combined with its superhero-centric tone, has allowed more viewers to find themselves watching this box office flop.
As such, it’s unlikely that the film will have any major critical reevaluation – at least at this point in time. But fans will no doubt be pleased to see that so many Max subscribers are giving this Marvel movie a shot – even if they weren’t there to support the project in theaters.
The film, titled Madame Web, is a spin-off centered around the Spider-Man character of the same name. However, the film also operates as something of an origin story, with an ensemble cast that includes Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, Celeste O’Connor, and Emma Roberts.
It certainly provides viewers with an interesting take on the titular character, one that includes a much younger version of Madame Web played by Dakota Johnson. Though Johnson herself seems unhappy with the feedback the film has received so far, there are fans that appreciate her performance and, if nothing else, the campy nature of the movie.
