The new Disney Plus series The Acolyte has been introducing plenty of firsts for the Star Wars franchise. For example, it’s the first live-action story to be told prior to the events of The Phantom Menace. Now it looks like The Acolyte is achieving another first by adding non-binary pronouns to the long-running live-action Star Wars franchise.
This new addition to the galaxy far, far away was introduced in the show’s fourth episode. Osha, played by Amandla Stenberg, contemplated the proper pronoun usage in the episode titled Day. Osha begins interacting with a number of characters led by Master Sol (Lee Jung-jae) and Jedi knight Yord Fandar (Charlie Barnett).
At one point, a character named Bazil (Hassan Taj) is introduced. He’s a Tynnan tracker that struggles to get along with Pip, the droid belonging to Osha. In turn, Osha speaks with Jedi padawan Jecki Lon (Dafnee Keen) and asks her who Bazil is.
After learning the new The Acolyte character’s name, Osha asks the following question regarding pronouns:
“Is he, or they, with us?”

While pronouns have become commonplace in Star Wars comics, specifically those Marvel comics set during The High Republic, this is the first time such pronouns have been acknowledged on the live-action front. And considering that we’re still relatively early within the show’s story, we should see plenty of other surprising additions in the future.
The Acolyte has so far been quite divisive with fans. While it’s become one of the most popular titles available on Disney Plus, fans have had mixed responses to the show’s representation of The Force. Especially its usage by Osha’s coven which have become known as “lesbian space witches.”
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional Star Wars updates as we have them. For now, The Acolyte is currently available to stream via Disney Plus. Fans will be able to see the next episode when it premieres on June 26, 2024.
