Netflix has introduced horror fans to an all-new kind of shark movie, and viewers seem to be loving it. In fact, the newly-released French horror thriller has Netflix viewers making favorable comparisons to such classics as Jaws and Deep Blue Sea, as well as more modern blockbusters like The Meg.
The film begins with a rather restrained pace, but as it continues forward, it begins to turn into a fierce frenzy of a shark attack film. What’s perhaps most refreshing is that the title doesn’t give into the modern tropes associated with shark movies, in which they’re played for laughs, because this is a movie that still takes its threats very seriously.
Additionally, it includes a few elements that make it a rather unique example of the genre. With a clever blend of different elements, all ranging from horror to sci-fi and a hint of action, it’s no surprise that this movie is climbing the streaming charts. In fact, as of this writing, FlixPatrol notes that the film is the #1 movie on Netflix.
Here are some of the social media posts that viewers have made on X regarding the film which is titled Under Paris:
There needs to be an option that says ‘Netflix should only produce films like this’ because I think Under Paris should win every best picture forever, what an unbelievable 100 minutes of my life; pic.twitter.com/eIlO7uYpgd

Under Paris on Netflix is a blast! Xavier Gens has sculpted a solid shark thriller. Unlike Sharks In Venice this delivers on its premise. This will grab a spot on most best shark movie lists from here on out. pic.twitter.com/S6baIzyyID

Under Paris (Sous la Seine) is the best shark movie in years, and probably the best Netflix original in a very long time.
Embrace the silliness of the concept and it is a blast, the finale is particularly ridiculous and all the better for it. pic.twitter.com/zTHs37DtIx

It’s quite nice to see an original horror thriller have such an impact on viewers. It’s even nicer to see that the film is a shark attack movie that’s capable of being taken seriously by Netflix subscribers. Especially at a time when the genre is often laughed at or parodied. Under Paris proves there are still a few surprises worth throwing at audiences, and one can only hope there’s more to come.
