The 1987 film Spaceballs famously parodied the sci-fi genre, notably the original Star Wars trilogy. Now, decades later, it looks like Spaceballs 2 is finally happening at MGM. Excitingly enough, it looks like original director Mel Brooks is involved along with Hollywood star Josh Gad.
As shared by Variety, via The Insneider, the new continuation “is in development at Amazon MGM Studios.” The original film was produced and distributed by MGM, which should certainly bring things full circle. Especially with Brooks involved, who is said to be a producer on the sequel.
While plot details are unconfirmed, the aforementioned Josh Gad will also produce the sequel in addition to starring in the film. Josh Greenbaum will direct the sequel which was written by Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Gad. Kevin Salter is attached to executive produce.
Much like the plot details being kept under wraps, it’s currently unknown who will star alongside Gad. The original film had an incredible cast which included Bill Pullman, John Candy, Daphne Zuniga, and Rick Moranis. The newcomers will certainly have a lot to live up to, but fans have been eager to see it happen.
In addition to the original Star Wars trilogy, the original Spaceballs also parodied the likes of Star Trek, Alien, and Planet of the Apes. Of course, science-fiction has evolved plenty since then, and even within the realm of Star Wars alone there is plenty more to make fun of.
Hopefully we’ll have more details in the near future, but this is certainly a major announcement for the time being. Especially for fans that never thought it would happen. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding Spaceballs 2 as we have them. This is a movie that’s been talked about for decades, and now that it’s finally happening, should be taken as another example that development hell is no more.
