Work is ongoing for the next Avengers film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The project, originally Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, has since been in the process of being reworked after Jonathan Majors was fired due to legal issues. Now the new Avengers project could see the return of as many as 60 MCU characters.
Marvel Studios currently has two Avengers projects. This particular film and the long-awaited Avengers: Secret Wars, which could very well be an extension of whatever happens in this first project. Fans no doubt recall the excitement of seeing a handful of MCU characters team up for the first time in 2012’s The Avengers.
However, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has expanded greatly since then, with no shortage of characters from films and television shows to now include. As such, it certainly isn’t difficult to come up with 60 characters that could be part of the movie. What is difficult, however, is figuring out the proper way to balance them on screen.
This report comes from Deadline, and according to the outlet, there’s already a potential director that could no doubt easily tackle the project. Shawn Levy is said to have been given the latest script by writer Michael Waldron. Levy recently finished this year’s upcoming blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine, and given that film’s respective handling of different Marvel characters and continuities, he already seems like a perfect fit for the next Avengers.
However, the outlet does note that “he has not given an answer on whether he will take the job, and the studio is still planning to meet with other directors while they wait on a decision from him.” After all, Levy has a busy schedule, and the film might be too much or simply not a priority after already finishing Deadpool & Wolverine.
Ultimately, we’ll have to see what decision he comes to and what direction Marvel Studios decides to take this next Avengers film and its follow-up, Avengers: Secret Wars. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates as we have them.
