The 1981 horror film Possession has been an influential and popular cult classic for decades. Now, however, it looks like a remake of Possession is now in the works with some very big names attached. It’s been shared that Smile director Parker Finn is working with Robert Pattinson to produce the Possession remake.
As shared by THR, “the project has engaged the town’s attention, with a bidding war breaking out among A24, Netflix, Paramount, Sony and Warner Bros.” The process for this bidding war is said to be “in the early stages, with meetings taking place this week,” and it’s also been said “other companies may enter the fray.”
The outlet adds that Parker Finn will “write the script, direct, and produce via his Bad Feeling banner.” Interestingly, while Robert Pattinson isn’t currently attached to star in the movie, “his acting involvement will be clarified down the road as the script and schedules develop.”
As for now, he’s merely producing through his production company Icki Eneo Arlo. Fans may also be pleased to learn that Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment is involved as a producer. Lee has been involved with some of horror’s biggest hits in the last few years.
The original Possession was directed by Andrzej Żuławski. The cast was led by Sam Neill and Isabella Adjani. Their story revolved around a crumbling marriage which seemed to include Lovecraftian horror with the likes of a tentacled monster and doppelgängers. It’s easy to see why it’s become a cult film in recent years.
Parker Finn is currently finishing up post-production work on Smile 2, so this is his first major project lined up following completion of the sequel. Paramount is said to be quite excited by Smile 2, and considering the success of the first Smile, it’s no surprise that they’re eager to get into the bidding war for Possession.
Hopefully more news will be released in the near future. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates on Possession as we have them.
