The inclusion of Hulu titles to Disney Plus has allowed the streaming service to offer more varied genres of content. In addition to traditional family-friendly fare, subscribers can also find R-rated titles and many of which were acquired from the 20th Century Fox library. Now one such R-rated horror movie from Disney’s 20th Century Studios is trending on Disney Plus.
The surprising success of this horror film, which recently finished its theatrical run, was recently revealed – as the movie is currently the number 10 film on Disney Plus. It’s unknown, as of this writing, if the film has an opportunity to move even higher up the list.
At this point, however, it’s still a great feat for the film – especially given its underperformance at the box office. The film only made $53.7 million with a $30 million budget, and that’s certainly less than preferred considering it’s a prequel to an iconic horror movie.
The film is none other than The First Omen, which was released earlier this year on April 5, 2024. With only a few months before hitting streaming services, it’s quite a surprise to see the horror film doing so well on Disney Plus (Hulu in the United States). Of course, many moviegoers have been preferring the streaming experience as of late, so perhaps they felt it was worth seeing at home rather than theaters.
It certainly proves that there’s still an audience for the Omen brand – even if they’re not willing to support the projects at the box office. Perhaps the next iteration of the franchise will move to streaming. For now, however, The First Omen concludes the franchise by moving the storyline directly into the original classic.
