The 2021 horror film The Black Phone, directed by Scott Derrickson and written by Derrickson with C. Robert Cargill, was a massive success for Blumhouse and Universal in 2021. It made $161.4 million at the box office with a budget between $16-18 million. A sequel was announced not too long ago, though Universal has confirmed that the release date for The Black Phone 2 has been changed.
As shared by Variety, Universal has been remapping their calendar for 2025. Though The Black Phone 2 originally received a Summer 2025 release date, it looks like it’s being pushed back to the Fall. Of course, that does make a perfect time to go see such a horror movie anyways.
The film was first scheduled to be released on June 27, 2025 though it will now be released on October 17, 2025. It seems like Universal is hoping to make a smash at the box office for the Halloween season with the film’s release. And, considering the success that it’s predecessor had merely being released in June, it’s not a bad idea.
Plot details for The Black Phone 2 are being kept under wraps. However, the first film revolved around Ethan Hawke as a serial killer named “The Grabber.” He abducts a young boy played by Mason Thames, and the story only develops from there. In fact, it takes a supernatural twist, which might not be surprising as the entire film is based on a story by author Joe Hill.
It certainly did its part in establishing a surprising new horror universe, one that was already referenced during a segment directed by Derrickson for V/H/S/85. At this rate, an entire Black Phone cinematic universe is being developed, and it’ll be interesting to see what kind of approach The Black Phone 2 takes to the formula.
As for now, we’ll have to wait until the new release date on October 17, 2025 to see what happens with The Black Phone 2. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates on the project as we have them.
