The video game franchise Five Nights at Freddy’s was successfully adapted as a live-action film in 2023. The horror movie was so well-received by fans of the games and mainstream audiences, that Blumhouse and Universal quickly announced a sequel. Now we have a brand-new release date for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2.
The first film clearly left the door open for a continuation. After all, the video game franchise has enough lore to fuel several movies (and perhaps spin-offs, at that rate.) For now, however, it’s clear that the sequel will no doubt bring more of the focus on Matthew Lillard‘s character, Steve Raglan aka William Afton, who is revealed by the end of the film to be Springtrap.
Matthew Lillard’s character teases his return at the end of the film, noting that he always comes back, so a sequel certainly made sense. Especially when one considers that Lillard signed up for multiple films with his contract. As shared by Variety, however, fans will have to wait until next year to see where the story goes from there.
The outlet notes that “Universal and Blumhouse’s ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 2,’ a horror sequel set in the haunted Chuck E. Cheese-esque establishment known as Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, will land in theaters on Dec. 5, 2025.”
The sequel is expected to begin production later this year. Jim Henson’s Creature Shop will return to design the animatronics for the film. More details will likely be released as we approach December 5, 2025. Until then, at least now fans have a date to look forward to.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the Five Nights at Freddy’s franchise as we have them. It’ll certainly be exciting to see what Matthew Lillard’s character has up their sleeve this time around, especially with the ending of the previous film setting up his ghostly return.
