Universal has a history with trying to reboot their iconic television series The Munsters. Now, just a few years after Rob Zombie had his own cinematic take on the property, James Wan is set to produce a new Munsters series.
As shared by Deadline, “UCP is developing 1313, which has been described as a horror series that plays on the Universal Monsterverse, aka a reimagining of the classic 1964-66 CBS sitcom The Munsters.”
In addition to James Wan as the show’s executive producer, he’ll be joined by Lindsey Anderson Beer as the project’s showrunner. 1313 is being developed by Wan, Beer, and Ingrid Bisu for UCP. Atomic Monster and LAB Brew are the production companies involved.
Other executive producers include Beer, Michael Clear, and Rob Hackett for Atomic Monster. Bisu serves as a co-exec producer on the series.
Hopefully we’ll have more information on the project soon. The Munsters has become something of a sandbox at Universal, with many different creative personnel giving their own interpretations of the material over the years. Of course, with the likes of James Wan and Lindsey Anderson Beer involved, this could be the iteration that has a longer shelf life than its recent predecessors.
After the original show ran from 1964 to 1966, a number of different projects were released. The property was followed by two films featuring original cast members, with an additional two movies released in the 1990s.
Another series was released in 1988 that ran for 72 episodes before being canceled. Bryan Fuller attempted a new series titled Mockingbird Lane, though the pilot wasn’t picked up and it was released instead as a Halloween special. And, aside from several failed projects, the most recent iteration of the project included Rob Zombie’s 2022 film The Munsters which tried to go back to the roots of the original show.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates on this new Munsters series as we have them. For now, these are certainly some interesting names attached to the project. We’ll have to see how development continues – and whether or not this will be the Munsters reboot that sticks for Universal.
