Dwayne Johnson is one of Hollywood’s most active actors, recognized by many as “The Rock.” However, for his latest role, Dwayne Johnson is actually unrecognizable. It’s something that will absolutely surprise longtime fans of the actor whose other works include various Fast & Furious films and the Jumanji sequels.
As you can see below, however, Dwayne Johnson appears to be headed in very different territory for his latest venture. He’ll be leading the upcoming A24 drama The Smashing Machine as a fictional version of legendary MMA fighter Mark Kerr. Emily Blunt stars alongside Johnson as his character’s wife, Dawn Staples.
The film is currently in production, and the first look at the project has been revealed online. Interestingly, while Dwayne Johnson still has his very familiar muscular physique, his face looks quite different. It appears that Johnson had some form of prosthetics applied to make him look even more like Mark Kerr.

Mark Kerr has certainly led a life worth being a movie. He’s won numerous awards and participated in a variety of championship competitions. His life was even the basis for a 2002 documentary titled The Smashing Machine: The Life and Times of Extreme Fighter Mark Kerr. With numerous ups and downs, including a battle with substance abuse, it’ll be a definite change for Dwayne Johnson when he portrays Kerr for the new film.
Benny Safdie both wrote and directed the A24 film which, in addition to Johnson and Blunt, also stars Lyndsey Gavin, Oleksandr Usyk, and Ryan Bader. A release date for the project has yet to be announced.
