Disney Plus has allowed Disney the opportunity to revisit many of their franchises that were formerly difficult to bring back to the screen. Whether they were theatrical, straight-to-video, or made-for-TV, plenty of IPs have had a second chance at life via Disney Plus. Now a major franchise sequel is reportedly in the works for Disney Plus – with a major star wanted.
This particular franchise lasted for three films, a spin-off, and a mockumentary series released via Disney Plus. Each film of the original trilogy was released in 2006, 2007, and 2008, respectively, while a spin-off seemingly closed the storyline in 2011. The aforementioned mockumentary was released from 2019 to 2024 for a total of four seasons.
Interestingly, the fourth season of the series actually teased the possibility of a fourth main installment. Now, according to The DisInsider, this could be a very real project in the near future. Additionally, he teases that a very unexpected star from the original films is wanted to return by Disney.
Here’s what he shared regarding the project which would be none other than High School Musical 4:
“Yes,” they answer when asked about another High School Musical movie being in the works, “Disney is working on a new High School Musical movie for Disney+, word on the streets is goal would be to bring back Zac Efron’s Troy.”
Obviously Zac Efron has moved on from the franchise as his career moved into very different directions following his work on High School Musical and its sequels. Nevertheless, having him back would certainly lend the fourth film a massive amount of credibility in addition to being a great way to get longtime fans interested. Of course, until Disney announces such news, this should all be taken with a grain of salt.
