The 2023 horror movie The Pope’s Exorcist is officially getting a sequel. The religious horror movie starred Russell Crowe as Gabriele Amorth, a character based on the real-life Catholic priest of the same name. Amorth was an exorcist for the Diocese of Rome, and he’s claimed to have performed tens of thousands of exorcisms. As such, there’s plenty of potential there to build a film franchise.
Now, as shared by producer Jeff Katz on X, that’s exactly the plan. Katz took to the social media platform to let “Amorth Nation” know that he “just got the call.” In all capital letters, Katz writes:
“IT’S OFFICIALLY HAPPENING!!!”
“È un seguito, amici miei,” he adds, before thanking the fans of the first film. “Thank you to the amazing #ThePopesExorcist fans. You made this happen. Gas up your Lambretta – and get ready to ride,” he concludes.

Perhaps it isn’t surprising, of course, considering the Julius Avery-directed film earned $77 million at the box office on a budget of $18 million. That’s still a profit – and there’s likely more money to be made with so much material to mine. It’s also quite amusing knowing that the first film had a rather difficult time making it to the screen. The project first began development in 2020, and after several production changes, it was finally shot in 2022.
In addition to its success in theaters, the film was also popular on Netflix. It was added to the streaming service just a few months after its initial release, and soon enough, The Pope’s Exorcist became the number one film in America for nine consecutive days. It’ll be interesting to see, then, how a sequel will perform.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the sequel to The Pope’s Exorcist as we have them. As for now, it’s exciting to know that the film was successful enough that we will be getting a sequel. After all, while it wasn’t a particularly groundbreaking exorcism film like some of its predecessors, it did offer a rather entertaining performance from Russell Crowe. And that alone makes it worthwhile.
