The Marvel Cinematic Universe has developed into one of Hollywood’s biggest franchises. Of course, that doesn’t mean every Marvel film has been a hit. In fact, one of the worst reviewed Marvel movies ever is now available to stream on Netflix – and it’s the number one movie on the platform.
Though Disney’s Marvel Studios has been in a rough patch with their releases in recent years, it’s Sony that has struggled even more with their own comic book movies. While the studio has collaborated with Marvel on the largely successful MCU Spider-Man movies, they have had less success on their own.
The studio did come up with the Venom film series that stars Tom Hardy. Both Venom and Venom: Let There Be Carnage have been quite popular with fans. However, their release of Morbius with Jared Leto has not. (Unless you count the memes that even prompted Sony to bring it back to theaters for a short time, albeit where it still did not make much money.)
Now Sony’s latest release, Madame Web, has faced a similar fate. Though it’s been quite popular on the internet for the memes it’s inspired, it hasn’t exactly been considered a great superhero venture by most. Now, however, the mixed-to-negatively received Spider-Man spin-off is the number one streamed movie on Netflix.
Obviously this will grant an opportunity for many subscribers to see the film for the first time, especially if they chose not to see it in theaters. However, it’s unknown if there’s any possibility for a grand reevaluation. At least at this point in time. Nevertheless, there are fans of Madame Web out there – despite its 57% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Ultimately, we’ll have to see what kind of shelf life Madame Web has with superhero fans. For now, however, it remains one of the worst reviewed Marvel movies of its time – and one that certainly has fans questioning what Sony has planned next in their side franchise of Marvel characters.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding Sony’s Marvel projects or the more mainstream Marvel Cinematic Universe as we have them. In the meantime, Sony’s Marvel movie Madame Web is available to stream on Netflix – if that’s something superhero fans are interested in watching, of course.
