Talks of a new sequel to the 1997 horror film I Know What You Did Last Summer have spread like wildfire ever since the release of Scream in 2022. Now it’s official – a new I Know What You Did Last Summer movie has received a 2025 release date.
The original I Know What You Did Last Summer, based on the novel by Lois Duncan, was written by Kevin Williamson fresh off 1996’s Scream. It helped usher in a new wave of popularity for slasher films, with a sequel released soon after in 1998 and another loose sequel in 2006.
Aside from an Amazon TV series which only lasted one season in 2021, the brand has remained dormant ever since. According to Bloody-Disgusting, however, a new film that will follow the events of the original movie is set to hit theaters next year.
The outlet reveals that “the franchise will return to theaters on July 18, 2025” with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson attached to direct the film. Additionally, the screenplay is being written by Leah McKendrick. Other details are scarce. Though it’s been reported that Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr., stars of the original film and its first sequel, are in talks to return.
The premise for the original film is described as follows:
“Four young friends bound by a tragic accident are reunited when they find themselves being stalked by a hook-wielding maniac in their small seaside town.”
It’s a premise that has certainly survived the test of time. After all, the movie has maintained a rather strong fan following even though it didn’t receive as many installments as the Scream franchise over the years. Hopefully, however, this new movie can change that.
