Wes Craven was involved with numerous iconic horror films throughout his filmmaking career. The Last House on the Left, The Hills Have Eyes, A Nightmare on Elm Street, The People Under the Stairs, and Scream are all films that had his name attached. Now one other such film which featured the involvement of Wes Craven is set to get a remake.
Of course, fans aren’t unfamiliar with seeing Wes Craven hits gets remade. Nearly every aforementioned movie has already either been remade or, in the case of The People Under the Stairs, has a remake in development. Now, however, a much different film from 2006 is getting the treatment this time around.
As shared in a new report, a film that Wes Craven produced but did not direct is set to be remade. It was actually directed by Nicholas Mastandrea, who worked with Craven on 1994’s New Nightmare as the first assistant director. Over a decade later, Craven helped Mastandrea with this particular film that would become his directorial debut.
The movie, titled The Breed, is set to be directed by brothers Nathan and Griff Furst. Interestingly, their work on the remake is being described in a new report from Variety as an “unconventional reimagining of the Wes Craven cult classic.” If that’s not exciting enough, it’s also been announced that Fall star Grace Caroline Currey will lead the film.
The outlet shares that her character, named Violet, is “a rebel icon and badass on a mission to search for abandoned dogs on a remote island which leads to complete adrenaline-fueled terror.”
The upcoming remake is being produced by the Furst brothers’ Curmudgeon Films, and co-produced and financed by Daro Film Distribution. The company also represents the international rights to The Breed.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding The Breed as we have them. For now, it’ll be interesting to see how this new take on the original film produced by Wes Craven turns out. The original film wasn’t exactly a critical success, but the premise could certainly work much better with the right creative team attached.
