The 1968 cult-classic sci-fi film Barbarella is about to receive the remake treatment. Excitingly enough, the upcoming film which once starred Jane Fonda in the titular role, is set to have Hollywood star Sydney Sweeney attached. Furthermore, it’s now been reported that director Edgar Wright is in talks to helm the project.
As shared by Variety, in addition to Wright in talks to direct, it’s been reported that “Jane Goldman and Honey Ross are in talks to pen the script.” The project certainly seems to be getting off to a great start. Especially with such names as Wright and Sweeney attached. Wright’s career includes Shaun of the Dead, Last Night in Soho, and Hot Fuzz as just a few examples, while Sweeney has been involved with Madame Web, Anyone but You, and Euphoria.
Sweeney shared the following statement about how her work with Sony on Madame Web has allowed her to tackle Barbarella:
“To me, that film was a building block, it’s what allowed me to build a relationship with Sony,” Sweeney said. “Without doing ‘Madame Web’ I wouldn’t have a relationship with the decision-makers over there. Everything in my career I do not just for that story, but strategic business decisions. Because I did that, I was able to sell ‘Anyone but You.’ I was able to get ‘Barbarella.’”
Of course, fans will know that Sweeney first announced her involvement with the project in 2022. It seems two years later, however, that progress is finally headed in the right direction. It’s certainly about time for a new Barbarella film to get off the ground, especially so many decades after the original was released.
