Netflix subscribers are once again ecstatic over a horror film added to the service. In fact, so many subscribers have been viewing the film that it’s been pushed to the top of the streaming service. At the time of this writing, it has the #2 spot internationally, which makes it the top horror film on Netflix outside of the US.
The film was initially released by 20th Century Studios, and due to a prior deal, the film was released via Max after its theatrical run. It became a popular hit on the service due to its unpredictable and bizarre narrative. Now, after surprising subscribers on that particular app, it looks like it’s doing the same to Netflix viewers.
As you can see below, there have been more than a few responses to the movie on social media over time. Viewers have compared it favorably to other genre classics, while others are trying to process the film itself. Ultimately, it goes to show that the horror genre still has the power of surprise when it comes to introducing new villains and tense setups.
Here are some of the reactions on X:

Barbarian (along with Hereditary) is one of the best horror movies of the last 25 years.
Smile is worth a watch but overrated.

BARBARIAN
IMDb: 7/10 Horror/mystery.
Barbarian is pure, simple,
crowd-pleasing horror that’s filled with surprises and shocks. pic.twitter.com/B4JAK55Z92— Movie Mania 🎥 (@Movie_Mania5) May 5, 2024
The film, titled Barbarian, was written and directed by Zach Cregger as his solo screen writing and directorian debut. The cast is led by Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgård, and Justin Long.
Of course, in addition to its success on various streaming platforms, Barbarian was also a success during its theatrical run. The film managed to earn $45.4 million in 2022 with a budget of only $4-4.5 million. It’s a great example of how well a horror film, especially even one with a rather low budget, can make a smash at the box office and on streaming.
