In recent years, legacy sequels have become a popular trend in the horror genre, allowing fans to revisit beloved characters and storylines decades later. The success of films like Halloween (2018) and Scream (2022) has reignited the desire for a new A Nightmare on Elm Street installment featuring Nancy Thompson who was played by Heather Langenkamp.
Heather Langenkamp herself has expressed enthusiasm for reprising her iconic role, stating in a recent Q&A event:
“In my imagination, I have several legacy sequels happening at the same time. She’s a great character. How could you say no?”
She continued, while speaking in a recent Q & A event with Nightmare on Film Street, saying:
“I just need somebody to get that off the ground. Especially considering ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ part 7, ‘Wes Craven’s New Nightmare.’ I do think there’s a lot of really great opportunities for new and excellent battles still to come.”
With all of the legacy sequels that have been made, it seems like it should only be a matter of time before someone tries it with the Elm Street franchise. The last time we saw the character of Freddy Krueger was back in 2010 in the A Nightmare on Elm Street remake which was panned by fans and critics alike. Despite that, however, the film was a hit at the box office, so there is clearly an aperitive for more of the character.
As the discussions continue about what to do with the franchise, it is clear that Heather Langenkamp is open to returning as Nancy Thompson for a legacy sequel – and we’re sure fans would want to see that as well. We will just all have to wait and see if that is what the filmmakers decide to do with the next project.
