Marvel Studios is currently working on bringing the X-Men to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The acquisition of the X-Men rights has been one of the most discussed topics since Disney bought 20th Century Fox. However, it looks like the inevitable MCU X-Men movie could be quite differently than expected – with a focus on the team’s female characters.
The X-Men film franchise has notably been led by characters including Wolverine, Beast, Jean Grey, Storm, Rogue, and Professor X. The X-Men superhero team consists of an ensemble of varying characters. As shared by a new rumor, however, this could be exchanged for a “focus on the female characters.”
This interesting detail, along with several others, were shared by @DanielRPK and reiterated via @MarvelNewsFilms on X. Here’s what they shared altogether from the rumors:
“Marvel wants to hire a writer that does comedy and drama really well
They don’t want it to be purely comedic
Focus on the female characters
Want to introduce characters that haven’t appeared in live-action to be alongside the main characters we all know”

This would indicate that the new film would have a strong balance between comedy and drama. Additionally, the film would revolve around many new characters for the franchise, with a stronger emphasis on those female characters that have been placed second to more iconic names like Wolverine. At a time when the aforementioned character is about to get plenty of screen time in the upcoming film Deadpool & Wolverine, that would certainly make sense.
Ultimately, we’ll just have to see how this film comes together. The project is still in its early stages and these rumors should all be taken with a grain of salt. Of course, considering that the X-Men franchise is recognized for diversity, and such a topic has become a priority for Disney and Marvel Studios, it wouldn’t be unwarranted to expect a more diverse cast this time around.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the X-Men film franchise and the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we have them. It’ll be interesting to see how the future for the X-Men brand pans out, especially if these rumors regarding the movie and the new focus on female team members turns out to be true.
