Disney’s biggest properties include massive franchises like Star Wars and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, with avenues like Disney Plus, the House of Mouse has explored creating sequels to smaller properties as well. Now it looks like one such Disney sequel that’s been years in the making has received a mysterious update.
Disney has offered fans a slew of unexpected or long-gestating sequels over the years. Hocus Pocus 2, for example, brought back the Sanderson Sisters for another Halloween extravaganza. The studio is also currently working on Tron: Ares, the third film in the long-running sci-fi franchise.
Now Anne Hathaway has teased a mysterious update for the Disney franchise that she herself is part of. Naturally she wasn’t able to reveal much, but it’s certainly a statement that is full of hope and bound to get fans excited. Hathaway revealed this exciting news while speaking with V magazine.
Here’s what she shared about The Princess Diaries 3:
“We’re in a good place,” Hathaway said. “That’s all I can say. There’s nothing to announce yet. But we’re in a good place.”
The project was first announced with Aadrita Mukerji attached to write the screenplay. Additionally, original Princess Diaries producer Debra Martin Chase was set to produce the new film and Melissa Stack was announced to executive produce. The first two movies were released in 2001 and 2004, and while there haven’t been any casting announcements, it’s expected that Anne Hathaway could return for the third film.
Here’s what Hathaway had to say about working on the original installments:
“To be honest, it never occurred to me that I didn’t have the power of a point of view, at least creatively as it related to my character. I’m really lucky. My first substantial film role, the second film I ever did, was ‘The Princess Diaries.’ I was so generously invited into that process by Garry Marshall; he valued my take on being a teenage girl and elevated me to such a valued status on set that it never occurred to me on other sets that I didn’t have that same autonomy, or that same ability to collaborate,” Hathaway said. “I always wanted to be pleasant. But I also always thought that having strong opinions meant I was doing my job.”
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the Disney sequel The Princess Diaries 3 and the work of Anne Hathaway as we know more. As for now, it’s exciting to know that the sequel is still in the works and hopefully fans will be treated to a proper announcement sooner rather than later.
