Nicolas Cage and John Travolta both starred in the hit 1997 action film Face/Off. Now, close to three decades later, it looks like the two actors could be returning for Face/Off 2. Both Cage and Travolta are rumored to star in the long-gestating continuation.
Director Adam Wingard has been teasing a Face/Off sequel for years, one that would unite him with his collaborator, writer Simon Barrett. Now, as shared by insider Daniel Richtman via World of Reel, it looks like some positive developments are starting to happen in the world of Face/Off.
They weren’t able to share much beyond the alleged involvement of both Nicolas Cage and John Travolta for the sequel. Obviously, however, fans are eager to know how that would work. Especially considering the outcome for Cage’s character in the original film.
Interestingly, the outlet did remind readers of a previous quote from Simon Barrett. Barrett, who is involved with the sequel as a writer, suggests that Cage’s character Castor Troy didn’t actually die. Here’s what he had to say at the time:
“The funny thing is, I never personally thought Castor Troy died at the end of Face/Off. When you watch it now, it’s kind of clear that what they were actually probably doing was trying to have it both ways where he looks pretty damn dead when he gets shot with the fishing spear. But, they don’t cover him up and the back of it is him getting loaded on an ambulance. To me, don’t load a person on an ambulance next to a living person without putting a sheet over them in a movie unless they’re alive.”
Hopefully, whatever the outcome ends up being, it’s something that pleases fans of the original film. Obviously Adam Wingard will be directing the new film in place of John Woo, who directed the 1997 classic, but Wingard has certainly proven himself to be a capable director in recent years.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional Face/Off 2 details as we have them. For now, it’ll be exciting to see Nicolas Cage and John Travolta potentially return for a new Face/Off movie, as difficult as it may be to believe. After all, stranger things have certainly happened in the world of Hollywood.
