Melissa Barrera recently starred in Scream and Scream VI. The two films successfully relaunched the Scream film franchise. However, Barrera was removed from participating in Scream 7, due to comments she made about the conflict in Gaza. Now it looks like Melissa Barrera has set her sights on a separate franchise – Scary Movie.
The first installment in the Scary Movie franchise was a direct parody of the original Scream film. As such, it would be quite fitting to see Barrera star in a similar relaunch for that particular property. Melissa Barrera expressed her desire to do as much while talking in a new interview.
It’s currently unknown how exactly the new Scary Movie film will tie in with the originals, if at all, and many fans would love to see the original Scary Movie cast return. However, there’s certainly room for a few new players, and Barrera believes it would be fun to do so.
Here’s what Melissa Barrera shared with Inverse about appearing in the Scary Movie reboot:
“I always loved those movies,” Barrera begins. “When I saw it announced, I was like, ‘Oh, that would be fun. That would be so fun to do.”
She also acknowledges that the film could potentially reuse its former stars rather than focus on new actors:
“They have the iconic cast that did it, so we’ll see what goes on with that. I’m just excited to see a new one.”
In addition to the Scream films, Barrera also stars in the new vampire film Abigail from Radio Silence. Additionally, she confirms that she’s open to just about anything for the future:
“I have this thing of never saying never to anything. I’m very open to the opportunities that come,” Barrera reveals. This could include appearances in the superhero genre, which she believes “a Latino superhero would be very good at uniting the community.”
As such, we’ll have to see what projects Melissa Barrera finds herself doing in the future. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates as we have them.
