The horror genre is always full of surprises. Now it looks like one such surprise, a new take on a classic IP, is being called an “insane” and “gore-filled” – with some horror fans even suggesting that it’s worthy enough to be “movie of the year.”
The responses to the film were shared on X, where many other users emphasized how delighted they were by the film. Some reviews on IMDb are even calling it the “best movie of the year”. Though it’s still rather early to see how the film will continue to perform in theaters, this is a great start for a film that will partially need word-of-mouth to succeed.
The movie was inspired by 1931’s classic film Dracula and 1936’s follow-up Dracula’s Daughter. Of course, the film has a much more modern plot, with Dracula’s daughter being reimagined as the titular ballet dancer Abigail. Nevertheless, fans clearly love the idea, and fingers crossed that Universal continues to allow filmmakers their own distinct visions when adapting their horror classics for modern day.
Here are the tweets shared by users that have seen the new horror movie:

BTW the performance from Alisha Weir in ABIGAIL is insane. There was a point where I was wondering if she really was a teenager.
Definitely in the running for my top performance from a young actor this year. pic.twitter.com/FkMXKYK6Xr

From start to end Abigail is one hell of a fun, exhilarating and gore filled ride. It finds the perfect balance between humor and horror. The casting was spot on and I loved the little tribute to Angus Cloud.#AbigailTheMovie @universaluk pic.twitter.com/8niYoqBGgS

I fucking love when I see a trailer or hear a premise for a movie and immediately think “this was made for me” and it absolutely delivers. Abigail was made for me. A blood soaked thrill ride that is probably the funnest movie of the year. This is the type of shit I live for. pic.twitter.com/eoqRT4Pskw

It’s always been difficult for recent iterations of the Universal Monsters to find an audience. However, there have been a few successes in recent history. One of these successes includes Leigh Whannell’s Invisible Man. And, much like that film, Abigail takes a rather different approach to its source material while providing a strong story and enjoyable cast of characters.
Abigail was directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. The screenplay for the film was written by Stephen Shields and Guy Busick.
The cast of Abigail includes Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, Kathryn Newton, Will Catlett, Kevin Durand, Angus Cloud, Alisha Weir, and Giancarlo Esposito.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional horror updates as we have them. It’s definitely nice to see Abigail, especially with the film being a new take on the classic Universal Monsters, find so much success with newer audiences. Hopefully this is a positive sign for what’s to come.
