The 2005 series Supernatural managed to keep audiences hooked with a surprising number of fifteen total seasons. Now one of the show’s co-stars, Jared Padalecki, has teased a return to Supernatural which would include fellow co-star Jensen Ackles.
It’s worth noting that after the series ended in 2020, there was a one-season spin-off series titled The Winchesters. The spin-off debuted in 2022 and ended in 2023. Ackles returned for a small role in the series, albeit without Padalecki.
Now, as shared in an interview with CBR, Jared Padalecki confirms that he’ll be returning to the world of Supernatural – and with his co-star back as well. This exciting development comes after Padalecki agrees that “it’s weird” without any Supernatural content on air.
Here’s what he shared:
“The simple answer to your question is 100%. I will play Sam Winchester again. Jensen will play Dean Winchester again. It’s more of a timing and availability thing.”
He explained that this was always planned, with Padalecki and Jensen Ackles having discussed when the best timeline would be to reprise their roles:
“In hindsight, Jensen and I have always said ‘always,’ if we ever have the option. I think in the last two or three seasons of Supernatural, when we realized somebody might want more, we said ‘2025. In 2020, we’re ending this. Let’s get together in five years and see what Sam and Dean are up to.'”
He adds that he’s even preparing to have new discussions with Ackles about their return:
“I’m going to see him in a few weeks to talk to him about it again. We’ve talked about it a few times. He and I are both champing at the bit to see what these boys have been up to and what else good they can do in this world or the next. I’m excited about it.”
Fortunately, for any worried fans, they also want to make sure that it will be a story worth coming back for:
“My only contingency about it is, with Jensen and I being so protective of the show and the characters, the story has to be absolutely right. I don’t just put on flannel and big coat, get in an Impala and say ‘Dean!’ That won’t work for Jared. It needs to have a purpose, as Sam and Dean always did.”
It’s definitely nice knowing that not only do they love their roles – and want to return – but that they want to do it for the right story. As always, stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any updates as we have them. If their plan really is to come back around 2025 – then we should have more details soon.
