The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film franchise has been largely geared towards kids. Now, however, Paramount is shaking things up by announcing a R-rated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie.
The project, as shared via THR, will actually be based on a popular fan-favorite story from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics. Obviously fans are ecstatic to see this story make the leap to the big screen – especially after the success of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.
Of course, while that was a kid-friendly endeavor, this new take will adapt the story Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin. The outlet notes that this new iteration is being written by “Tyler Burton Smith, who co-wrote the upcoming R-rated action movie Boy Kills World and who wrote the 2019 iteration of Chucky horror franchise Child’s Play.”
Here’s what else the outlet was able to share regarding the development of the new film:
“Walter Hamada is producing through his 18hz production company as part of his multiyear deal with the studio. Hamada is the former head of DC Films who rose through the ranks at New Line, where he oversaw the Warner Bros. division’s horror movies, including The Conjuring and It franchises.”
Interestingly, they note that 18hz is focused on making projects that are part of the horror genre. As the publication reminds, however, The Last Ronin does fit in that category.
“Set in a totalitarian future New York City, the comic miniseries told of how the Turtles and master Splinter are killed off one by one, by the grandson of the villainous Shredder and synthetic ninjas. One Turtle manages to survive, barely, and vows to exact bloody vengeance. One trick of the book was that it wasn’t clear, for a while at least, which one of the Turtles lived, as the survivor had the weapons of all four.”
Hopefully more details about this project will be revealed soon. The comic book version of The Last Ronin was released between 2020 and 2022, and the story was a massive hit. It’s no surprise that Paramount would like to channel this success towards the big screen.
