Mortiz Mohr‘s Boy Kills World is approaching its release date fast, and the movie can’t be here soon enough. The ultra-violent, action-filled film is guaranteed to have something for everyone who’s a fan of the one-man army genre. Mohr gathered an impressive cast of actors to tell the story of revenge with a hilarious comedy twist behind it. Starring Bill Skarsgård as Boy, the character has to go through a sea of henchmen to reach his main target, the Van Der Koy family.
Brett Gelman, Michelle Dockery, Sharlto Copley, and Famke Janssen, the group’s mother, play the Van Der Koys. Along with their protector, June 27th, played by Jessica Rothe, Skarsgård’s character has a lot of work and killing to fulfill his mission.
Janssen and Rothe are no strangers to the big screen and have carved a successful path in Hollywood. The two were at this year’s WonderCon to promote Boy Kills World to potential fans of the yet-to-be-released film, and they were excited to share what they have in store for audiences. We got a chance to speak with the two about the film and found some interesting information about developing the nuance of their characters and what genres they would like to tackle next.
So, Jessica, I really enjoyed Boy Kills World. I know you did some of the physicality the movie called for and some horror movies in the past. I was wondering if this is a new trajectory in your career where you’re making more action-oriented films.
Jessica Rothe: I kind of want to do some of everything. So, this was a huge bucket list for me because I love action movies and characters that are incredibly physical. On this film, particularly, we got to build such an incredible physical world with our amazing stunt team. I want to do it all: action, comedy, horror, drama, musicals, and a little bit of everything.
You talked a little bit about how you got into your character. Can we go into a bit more detail about getting into the mindset of Hilda Van Der Koyinto?
Famke Janssen: Yeah, I mean, in reading it, I thought, “Oh, that’s interesting. There are some interesting bits in it, but we need depth because otherwise, how are we going to go along on this journey with her?” I saw someone who had just severe mental issues, and so her concept of reality is warped for other people’s perceptions.
But for herself, that was just her own reality. She really believed everything she did was for a better reason. The deeper we got into the story, the more we realized she was this crazy woman stuck in a basement somewhere with hair that kept growing. So I really enjoyed going on that journey with her.
Boy Kills World releases in theaters on April 26th.
