Actor Christian Bale has surprised audiences with a wide range of roles over the years. Now, however, Christian Bale is tackling one of cinema’s most iconic villains – Frankenstein’s monster – in a new adaptation titled The Bride.
As the title suggests, the film will actually be led by “The Bride of Frankenstein,” with a new take on that particular character to be played by Jessie Buckley. Additionally, the film itself is being directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, who previously acted alongside Christian Bale in The Dark Knight.
On that note, fans were recently treated to an image of Christian Bale as Frankenstein’s monster. The makeup is certainly well-done, with many fans praising the look of his character. However, there’s one element that fans are criticizing on social media.
As you can see below, the new take on Frankenstein’s monster apparently includes a tattoo. Fans can see a tattoo which states the word “Hope” on the creature’s chest. Fans are drawing comparisons to Jared Leto’s Joker, a character from David Ayer‘s Suicide Squad that was covered in body and face tattoos. Similarly, others are suggesting comparisons to Bill Skarsgård’s new take on Eric Draven in The Crow.
Here’s the image and some of the reactions shared online:

Look at that stitching, the subtle tattoo, the tasteful font of it all.

Christian Bale to play Frankenstein’s Monster in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride …
Is anyone else getting “Jared Leto’s ‘Joker’ tattoos” vibes? pic.twitter.com/LVJHpzxShh

Of course, while Bale’s character is nowhere near as extreme as Leto’s, it’s easy to see why comparisons are being made. Especially when previous incarnations of the iconic monster generally did not rely on tattoos. For a new take, however, and one being made for a new generation – it could be that director Maggie Gyllenhaal and actor Christian Bale want to do something genuinely different with the creature’s look.
Ultimately, we’ll just have to see how The Bride turns out. With such an interesting team both in front of and behind the camera, however, it’s certainly bound to be an adaptation worth giving a watch. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding The Bride as we have them. For now, the film is currently scheduled to hit theaters on October 3, 2025.
