It’s an exciting time for movie fans as surprise sequels are being announced quite frequently. As such, film buffs will be delighted to know that one cult classic thriller movie from 1994 is set to receive a surprise sequel – and it will be available for streaming as soon as next month.
The upcoming sequel will even feature the director and cast of the original film. Of course, many fans might be more familiar with its 1997 remake from the United States which starred Ewan McGregor. Nevertheless, that makes it all the more exciting to see the original Danish thriller find its way back into pop culture.
The sequel is set to begin streaming via Shudder on May 17, 2024. As such, this comes as quite a surprise without much time to wait. Of course, given that the original came out thirty years ago, it’s also about time.
The sequel, as shared via Bloody-Disgusting, is titled Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever, and it will follow the events of the original 1994 film Nightwatch. Ole Bornedal returned to write and direct the new sequel following his work on the first, and the original’s cast members Kim Bodnia and Ulf Pilgaard, along with Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, all returned as well.
The plot of the film is shared as follows:
“22-year-old medical student Emma (Fanny Leander Bornedal) has just taken a job as the night watch in the same forensic department where her parents were once almost killed by the famed psychopathic police inspector Wörmer. The events led to her mother’s suicide, and her father Martin (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) has turned to tranquilizers to suppress the memories. Determined to investigate what exactly happened to them, Emma tracks down and confronts Wörmer, only to unintentionally reawaken his bloodthirst and ignite a violent revenge on everyone who sealed his destiny years ago.”
Thomas Heinesen, Christel C.D. Karlsen, and Signe Baasch produced the film, while it was executive produced by Katrine Vogelsang, Henrik Zein, Peter Nadermann, and Doris Schrenner.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever and any other upcoming titles coming to Shudder. It’s definitely exciting to see the classic 1994 film finally get a sequel three decades after its release. Here’s hoping it lives up to the original.
