The sequel to 2019’s Joker, Joker: Folie à Deux, has had fans eagerly waiting to see what director Todd Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix have up their sleeves. The first Joker film was a major box office success, and one that went against many of the tropes associated with superhero genre movies. Now it looks like Joker 2 will be even more of a surprise, especially now that a controversial plot rumor has been revealed to be true.
This plot rumor, of course, is that the Joker sequel is actually a musical – something that’s stunned many fans hoping Joker 2 would be more like its predecessor. Of course, the first film flourished by being different, and it’s likely that the sequel will as well. This also makes sense given who will be starring in the film alongside Joaquin Phoenix.
In addition to Phoenix reprising his role as the titular comic book villain, fans can look forward to Lady Gaga portraying a new live-action version of Harley Quinn. To date, the live-action version of the character on the big screen has only been played by Margot Robbie. Naturally, fans are eager to see how Lady Gaga portrays the role, especially within the world of Joker.
As shared by Variety, however, it looks like this world will be changed into something of “a jukebox musical” for the sequel. The outlet reports that the film “integrates at least 15 reinterpretations of ‘very well-known’ songs.” Some of these songs are said to include “That’s Entertainment” from The Band Wagon, with “a door open for an original song (or two) to be added to the final version” of the film.
Additionally, the outlet reports that “Hildur Guðnadóttir, the Oscar-winning composer of the first ‘Joker‘ film, is said to ‘infuse her distinctive, haunting [music] cues” into each number.'” This should help the different style of the film better connect with its predecessor, especially with how many fans enjoyed the original film’s soundtrack and use of music.
Fans will be able to see the sequel to Joker when it hits theaters on October 4, 2024. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding Joker: Folie à Deux, aka Joker 2, as we have them. For now, it’ll be interesting to see how this continuation of the 2019 blockbuster will turn out. Especially if they continue to take such creative liberties with the source material.
