There were many successful films released in 2019. Of course, not every film was a guaranteed success for the year, and one comic book movie actually became a major flop at the box office. Now, however, it seems to have found new life on Netflix as audiences are now raising this comic book flop to the top of the streaming service’s charts.
This particular comic book film was not the first adaptation based on its respective source material. As such, it seems as though fans weren’t ready for a new take. The consequence of that is that the film made only $55.1 million at the box office with a $50 million budget. Now, several years after its release, it seems to be finding a new audience on Netflix.
The movie has started to trend on Netflix in countries located in Central and South America. The movie is steadily climbing the charts for the streaming service, and it’s clear that there is absolutely an audience for this divisive new iteration.
The film, titled Hellboy much like its 2004 predecessor, is based on the comic book creation of the same name by Mike Mignola. Some fans were disappointed that they didn’t receive another follow-up to the 2004 iteration, while others appreciated the new – and sometimes more faithful – take on the comics. Ultimately, it is a big-budget monster movie with plenty of effects and chaos, so it’s not surprising that Netflix subscribers are finding themselves checking the comic book flick out.
The 2019 comic book film was directed by Neil Marshall and starred David Harbour as the titular character. The R-rated movie followed two features from Guillermo del Toro, 2004’s Hellboy and 2008’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army, which both starred Ron Perlman as the titular character. The studios involved chose instead to craft a new take with Harbour’s interpretation of the character. Now another new iteration titled Hellboy: The Crooked Man is on the way.
