It’s been unclear what direction the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has been headed. Obviously many fans would love to see another sequel with Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow. But, for numerous reasons behind-the-scenes, it seems more likely that fans will receive a reboot of sorts instead. Now, according to producer Jerry Bruckheimer, that’s absolutely the case with the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie – it will be a “reboot.”
This was confirmed by Bruckheimer who gave some new details regarding the project. He explained this bit while discussing the future of both the Top Gun and Pirates of the Caribbean brands. Of course, one property is easier to work with than the other.
Specifically, here’s what Bruckheimer had to share with ComicBook about which film might come next between the two franchises:
“It’s hard to tell. You don’t know, you really don’t know,” Bruckheimer began. “You don’t know how they come together. You just don’t know. Because with Top Gun you have an actor who is iconic and brilliant. And how many movies he does before he does Top Gun, I can’t tell you. But we’re gonna reboot Pirates, so that is easier to put together because you don’t have to wait for certain actors.”
Top Gun would require Tom Cruise’s schedule to be free in order to create the film. As for Pirates of the Caribbean, if the new movie is simply a “reboot,” than it wouldn’t rely on any one actor’s schedule. So, in addition to being a reboot, it seems to suggest that Disney isn’t banking on having Johnny Depp available to appear in the film either.
Hopefully we’ll have more details soon. There have been plenty of reports regarding the future of the Pirates franchise. And, while that future remains unclear, it does seem as though something is in the works at Disney.
