A 2014 flop is trending on Netflix. The streaming platform has notably shined a light on other such underperforming films in the past. This time, however, it might surprise viewers because this particular film was always expected to be a major hit.
The film was both co-written and directed by George Clooney, who also starred in the film with other famous cast members. It seemed as though the film was guaranteed for greatness prior to its theatrical release. However, the film only earned $155 million worldwide on a $70 million budget.
Despite this, however, the ten-year-old flop seems to be reaching a new audience on Netflix a decade later. The film recently hit the number 4 spot in the streaming service’s Top 10 category. That’s certainly a big leap for a film that flopped at the box office ten years ago.
The film, The Monuments Men, has a cast led by George Clooney in addition to Matt Damon, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Jean Dujardin, Bob Balaban, Hugh Bonneville, and Cate Blacnhett. The story is based on the 2007 non-fiction book The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History by Robert M. Edsel and Bret Witter.
It’s an interesting story which revolves around a group of treasure hunters during World War II. The characters are doing their best to save valuable artworks before the Nazis manage to destroy them. One might even consider the film a spiritual successor to Ocean’s Eleven, especially with George Clooney and Matt Damon collaborating again.
Unfortunately, the film never did reach the same level of success. But perhaps the sudden impact on Netflix will turn things around for The Monuments Men in the long-term.
