One of the most unique feature films from director Steven Spielberg is officially getting a sequel. The fan-favorite blockbuster, released in 2018, is officially having its story continued with an all-new movie.
As shared in a new report, Spielberg will be involved with the new sequel as a producer. This will be a change as he did direct the original film – though seeing him involved in any capacity is surely an exciting sign for fans.
Steven Spielberg has directed more than a few of the biggest motion pictures in history. His credits include Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and Jurassic Park. As such, he was a perfect fit to direct the aforementioned blockbuster in 2018, which paid tribute to some of these films and numerous other pop culture fan-favorites.
This is because the film was none other than Ready Player One. A sci-fi epic that takes place in a future dominated by virtual reality, Ready Player One showcases a world where users can enter the OASIS. This landscape is populated by players that can become their favorite fictional characters, adapt to use iconic vehicles and locations from pop culture, and overall bask in a world where everyone’s a movie buff.
Obviously this concept has plenty of potential to be explored in further sequels. Now it looks like one is happening. The original film, Ready Player One, was even based on a book which was followed by a sequel titled Ready Player Two. It’s unknown if the new film will follow that exact story, but following was shared with Showbiz 411 via SFFGazette.com
“Exclusively, the great Steven Spielberg told me that ‘Ready Player Two,’ the sequel to his huge hit from a couple of years ago, will be coming. Only Spielberg will produce, not direct. He didn’t give me a timetable.
“Spielberg, meantime, is exploring his options for new films with a lot of choices including ‘The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara,’ which has been bantered about for years. He also has a remake of ‘Bullitt‘ with Bradley Cooper that’s been on deck for some time.”
As such, we’ll have to see how this project evolves from here. Especially with Steven Spielberg involved only as a producer rather than director this time around for the sequel. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates as we have them.
