Subscribers of Netflix have been watching a rather divisive horror movie, sending it straight into the Top 10 category of the massive streaming platform. It’s certainly surprising considering the film’s mixed reception, but nevertheless, it clearly has its fans.
The film, released in 2021, is trending on Netflix and it’s one of the latest installments in a long-running horror franchise. As such, the film was never going to please everyone. After all, these types of franchises are known for various different eras each with their own generations of fans. It was almost always bound to be divisive.
Of course, the film also followed a much more successful predecessor released in 2018, which earned $259 million worldwide on a $10 million budget. The divisive 2021 installment, that’s currently streaming on Netflix, managed to earn $133 million on a $20 million budget.
This 2021 installment is none other than Halloween Kills. Its 2018 predecessor was a rather successful rejuvenation of the Halloween franchise, having reintroduced Michael Myers and Laurie Strode as they were last seen in the 1978 original. The two films were followed by a final installment, Halloween Ends, which grossed $105 million on a $33 million budget.
The 2018 film was mostly praised for being a return to basics for the franchise. Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends, on the other hand, were both criticized for making drastic changes to the franchise’s lore. Halloween Kills, in particular, faced backlash from fans and critics for its use of established characters including Tommy Doyle, Lindsey Wallace, and and Lonnie Elam.
Other fans were quite pleased by Halloween Kills, with praise for the film’s use of violence and increased body count. It’s not a film that builds upon the Halloween story in any particularly meaningful way, but it does deliver on giving Michael Myers plenty of prey to kill.
As such, it’s not surprising that fans are eagerly watching the horror movie on Netflix and driving it up into the platform’s Top 10 category. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional news regarding the latest trending titles on Netflix as we have them.
