Director Ari Aster is set to follow his collaboration with Joaquin Phoenix, Beau is Afraid, with an all-new A24 film titled Eddington. Phoenix is set to return along with Emma Stone and Pedro Pascal joining the cast.
As shared via THR, production on Eddington is set to begin as soon as “this week.” Austin Butler is also set to appear, the publication notes, along with Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward, and Clifton Collins Jr.
Here’s what the outlet was able to share regarding the premise of Eddington which teases a major deviation and all-new genre to play in for the director:
“Aster is directing Eddington from his own script that centers on a small-town New Mexico sheriff with lofty aspirations.”
An official announcement from A24 on Instagram also teases the New Mexico desert setting of the film with a caption that calls the project a “contemporary western.”

As mentioned, fans seem to have mixed feelings regarding Aster’s most recent film. Beau is Afraid, released in 2023, only made $11.5 million at the box office on a $35 million budget. On the contrary, Midsommar made $48 million on a $9 million budget, and Hereditary scared up $82.8 million on a $10 million budget.
Therefore it’ll be interesting to see how another effort from Aster that’s more “contemporary western” than horror will connect with audiences. With a major cast attached, however, it could be enough to win viewers over. We’ll hopefully have a better idea once production begins – and when a release date is set.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding Eddington and the work of filmmaker Ari Aster as we have them. For now, it’ll be exciting to see him step into yet another territory following his successful horror works Hereditary and Midsommar and the divisive dark comedy Beau is Afraid.
