Greta Gerwig has had quite the career so far. Most recently, her new film Barbie became a true Hollywood blockbuster and earned several Academy Award nominations. Now Greta Gerwig is taking the time to praise a very different film, an iconic and chilling horror movie.
For those unfamiliar, Gerwig isn’t actually a stranger to the horror genre. In fact, she had a role in the 2009 horror film The House of the Devil from writer, director, and editor Ti West. Of course, even that film is quite distant from the horror movie that Greta Gerwig has in mind.
Gerwig discussed this film during an interview with W Magazine. The interview reached a point where she mentioned this horror film and one particular scene that quite impressively changed the genre.
This film, Don’t Look Now, was released in 1973. It stars Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie as a married couple who must learn to grieve the death of their young daughter. It’s an impressive feature for a number of reasons, however, including the addition of a very lengthy sex scene.
Of course, such a scene would have been quite progressive for 1973. As such, Gerwig finds particular interest in it:
“Because the scene is so extended and so glorious, you feel like you’re watching something that you shouldn’t — so that’s very exciting.”
In addition to that scene, however, the film offers many other chilling revelations throughout its runtime. It’s become such a horror classic, that even Criterion took the time to release a physical 4K UHD copy. For those unfamiliar with Don’t Look Now, it’s definitely worth a watch. And it’s better to go in without much more information than you already have.
On that note, it’s nice to know that Gerwig has such an appreciation for films like Don’t Look Now. It’s clear that she has endless strong influences for every part of her career, and if it means successes like Barbie, then it’ll be quite exciting to see what she has for moviegoers next.
